I am a decent silver/gold level player but I think there are definitely much room for improvement for my gameplay. Can any pros out there provide me with some basic micro/macro tips such as hot keying your buildings? or any good ways to stay active on all sides of battle?
Watch your replays, whether you win or lose, and you will improve from there..
Also watch high level games on youtube to see how they play.. I wouldn't try to emulate these guys strats because you just probably don't have the APM to pull of their builds, I know I don't, but you will learn a lot of cool stuff that way.
I'm not too great at all but I know how to improve, and this is working very well for me.
make use of the score screen graphs and replays like FootMan2k says... if you lose, try and figure out why. Look at the timing and your relative army strength/income in the graphs, and adapt your builds accordingly.
Contrary to what Frozen said, do stop building workers. Firstly, there is a cap of 3 workers per mineral field, with the 3rd already suffering heavy diminishing returns, any more will not mine at all. Secondly, especially as I moved up the leagues, I noticed fights moving earlier and earlier in the game. As such, even in prolonged dragged out fights with t3 units, most players stay with 2 bases max, some never even expanded due to the constant pressure of having to produce more units. Look at how the fight is going and THEN decide whether to expand/build more workers or to simply keep up unit production and constant pressure.
Well depending on your race i would say: 1.Scout (intel is success)
2.Deny as many expos as possible (starve him from cash)
3.Harassment delay your opponent from his build (maybe even forcing him to make anti-air against banshees/voids/mutas)
4.Time your attacks.
Im a terran player and Im 1v1 bronze (seriously need a promotion though) and what i do is i expect not too advanced reactions from fellow bronzors that I build econ. NEVER STOP UPGRADING TECH. (unless i dont need them) Macro up before i engage in fights (hotkeys ftw) scout heavily (i sacrifice some marines to see what theyv got.) all-in-all youll be fine :)

Any good practice tips for increasing your APM?
Thanks everybody!
May be it's silly, but hotkey your unit production building, for quick rebuild army while your attention is away.
Scouting Scouting Scouting
You must see what your opponent is doing

Never stop building workers. Until the map is mined out, you haven't got enough.
Always have multiple buildings for the units you are focusing on.
Spend your money.
Learn the hotkeys for everything.
Here is how all the Platinum league gamers learned their way to the top (atleast the ones that started from the bottom during beta)

Watch Day9 religiously. I have gained so much knowledge myself from watching Day9!
