Upcoming Markup Changes (Cast your vote)
submit to reddit

  • I'm going to be switching our markup language (most likely), so I want to get feedback here.

The languages I'm looking at are the following:

This day started as a simple attempt to integrate TinyMCE instead of my javascript toolbar, but that didn't work out as I had planned (handling paragraphs is.. hard). So now we need to decide:

    1. Do we allow selecting different markups for every post/field (seems useless)
    2. Which markup do you prefer?
    3. Should we use different markup in different locations (makes sense, but then its confusing)

  • I vote keep it BBCode, don't confuse me =)

  • (As of right now, it mostly stands in favor of just improving BBCode)

  • So I guess the other question, beyond a live preview (which I'm whipping up right now, and is looking rather sexy), what features would you like to see adding to the BBCode?

There's a few big things I think that can improve posting/comments:

    1. Live Preview
    2. Being able to login in while posting your comment/thread (e.g. a login button if you're anonymous)
    3. Attachments (maybe, still up in the air if I want to support these)

There may also be additional buttons we can add to the toolbar to help things out.

  • nice, I like it... it interprets html and displays an inaccurate preview though (as though you can use html inline). Also, no preview shows up when you hit 'edit post' (I'm sure the same preview can be used here and possibly on other parts of the site)

  • Nice catch on the HTML slip. I'll be adding the preview on all forms that use the BB Code textarea, just didn't have time to finish that up today :)

  • The new live preview is just awesome. I've never seen anything like that before and it's very useful.

I also vote for more BBC, since it's the syntax we're all used to.

There are a few basic functions that are missing (missed them when I was writing my review): [center] (EDIT: Did you add color and size tags in the meanwhile? Now they work =])

Also, there are a few tags that are not previewed properly, like the [ list]

Be preparaed for reviews at a whole new level..

  • Can you add in being able to change the size of the text ?

  • Markdown looks pretty darn awesome though. Whatever it is, a live preview is a must :) What would be nice is if YouTube links auto-embedded as a player, and if linked images auto-generated a thumbnail in the post.

  • Right now we're having issues with auto-anything on links. If we can solve that, youtube will auto-embed :)

Right now you need to wrap it in:

    [youtube][/youtube]

    We'll get there though :)

  • Yeah I was aware of the YouTube BB tags, just looking forward to auto-embedding. It'll be revolutionary, whenever it happens :)
