Chat Channel Suggestions

I know everyone's heard about the issue with chat channels, but I've got a couple of suggestions for possible implementations on the official Battle.net forums. I encourage everyone to post their opinions here and if you're in the beta, on this forum thread as well:

I think the major reason why Blizzard is unwilling to add chat channels to the game is spam. Countering spam is an annoying issue, requiring moderators to prevent chat from quickly becoming a public advertisement chnanel.

I have a couple of proposals; post here to indicate which one you'd prefer.

Option A: Private Chat Channels (No Public)

How would it work? Click on the chat channels button, and you're prompted to enter a Channel Name and Password. Entering an unused Channel Name creates a channel with the specified Channel Name and Password.

What's the point, you ask?

1. Say you know someone online, but you don't want to give out your real name/email address to add them as a Real ID friend. No problem - get them to join channel X with password Y and you can add them from there.

2. Say you're trying to organize/enter a community-run tournament. Currently, you'd have to give out your email address to set up a match with your opponent. But with private chat channels, you could be given a tournament channel password to join, where the organizers can have all participants gather.

3. What if you just want to chat with friends without having to set up a "party" just to talk? You'd be able to do that too.

4. There's no possibility of spam. Unless you specifically invite someone to your channel, they will have no idea it even exists.

Option B: IRC-style chat channels

How would it work? (If you don't know how IRC works, you may be best off looking it up for an idea before reading on) Clicking on the chat channels button allows users to browse/specify a channel to join. These channels (unless specifically designated as an official Blizzard chat channel) are user-run and moderated. The creators of the channel are designated as channel operators, and they have moderator-like powers over the chat channels they create. If you don't like the way a channel is being run, just don't join it.

What's the point?

Everything applies as per the above points on private chat channels, but with the following additions:

1. External community discussions can now be brought into the game itself. It is very likely that StarCraft communities will create their own chat channels on Battle.net, and very unlikely that they would abuse moderation powers in their own channels. If they do, nobody would join their channel anyway.

2. There would be a place within Battle.net for people to have public game discussions without having to resort to forums/external chat rooms.
