Determining rank placement/points ?
submit to reddit

  • As everyone may have noticed from joining a league, you usually get placed in a division based on your win/loss

    5-0 - Platinum
    4-1 - Gold
    3-2 - Silver

    and so on.

My friend and I lost one game and thought that the gold league was a good fit for us, as we've been in it every reset.

However, even with a 4-1 record, we ended up in Platinum.
Soon enough we will hit 21rd in this division even though we didn't feel we fit in it, but it's just something I've been curious about.

"What determines your placement during the placement matches?"

Another question I've had lingering in my mind is how the system decides to give you a particular number of points during a matchup.

"Bonus pool and favoritism aside, what does the point system base itself off of?"

  • Exactly, also 2:3 = Bronze or also 1:4 = Bronze (or copper). 0:5 = Copper

Haha so sad I was in Silver and after reset made losses and got in Bronze, well im among the 1st there but should move up.

  • That is incorrect.
Even though it seems most common, it can't be based on Wins and Losses alone.

As you can see we are 4-1, yet in Platinum.

If there is another variable which the game uses to determine placement, perhaps that's what also determines promotions as well.

I'm just wondering what determines it.

  • I had a similar experience, after getting into silver league in 1 reset with 3-2, i slipped on another getting 2-3 but still managed silver league. Just throwing a guess here but it could be based on points for the game seen in the score screen of a game.
Also, seeing as SC2 is also from blizzard, it might follow the WoW arena in which you are assigned hidden rank/points for fairer matchmaking but its unlikely as the points will most slightly be resetted and should be completely unneccessary since there's another point system in place.

  • What determines is the skill of your opp. If you owned someone with good stats will give you more points and thus move you higher than winning vs less skilled. Since there are no lvls.. In war3 the higher level gave you more exp so it is what league he belongs to or what stats he has if you will get more points and thus move higheer

  • DrCometh is right; it's a mix of your wins/losses and WHO you won/lost against. Naturally the system will attempt to have you play against people you have a fair chance of winning or losing against (even in placement matches) but if there aren't enough players online and there is an imbalance, that is taken into account (ie. a win against a much better opponent does not count as unfavourably against you).

  • Also, I think to move up you just have to hit like 1250 points or something. I was put in silver for random 2v2... started playing a few games, hit 1st in division for like 2 or 3 games and it bumped me up to gold (it lowers your points)

  • Me and My friend hit #1 in Platinum after all, yet we are still strongly favored against.. heh

The favoring system must be broken, and what's causing the jump, as all of the guys in placement were favored.

After playing 70 games (yeah I'm a busy person) not once was I favored, and even my nub friend got into gold with 3-2.
All his enemies were favored as well.

  • In my opinion -- when it comes to ladders this is a very innovative way to approach it. Usually games (with ladders & leagues) try to be extremely in-depth about it, and I like Blizzard's choice to take a different approach

Here is the best summary I found of the system:

SC2ArmoryYou play 10 placement games per bracket, and by this I mean you play 10 1v1 games, 10 2v2 games, 10 FFA games, etc.

When your placement games are over, Battle.net decides a league and a division for you. I for example, am not that good, so I got placed into division 8 of the bronze league. Divisions are only segregated due to the number of people in a league. My division has about 25 people in it right now. The top 8 in each division gain access to a tournament, which there is no date for yet. I imagine that if you do well in your league's tournament, there are chances for promotion to the next league.

As for demotion... I just hope that's not possible, or I'll be in copper league before I know it. =P

Leagues go in order like this, from worst to best:

    Copper
    Bronze
    Silver
    Gold
    Platinum

And for a different aspect -- there is definitely some criticism

^ Don't let the link full you, this article seems to delve, mainly, into a negative outlook on the ladder system. I thought it was just as well a good read =)

  • There seems to be a hidden win/lose of each league you play vs. I have won a ton of games in a row with my wow friend in copper and we stay in copper.. I think we have gone like 12-2 after we placed in copper. yet my other AT partner we placed gold played about 5 games and promoted to platinum. 4-1 to place in gold for us went 9-1 promoted to plat.
Yet a 3erd AT i do we went 4-1 and was placed to plat and now we are like 10-10 and rank 50 in platinum still.. My good main AT team is rank 14 plat atm with like 70-50 record.

The divisions/leagues seem blah imo Its hard to tell where you place still i think.

  • Also in order to get in upper leagues you gotta be winning 75% of the games, like 3 wins to 1 loss.. Which is impossible with the current mass disconnections.

  • Yea they need to work on Latency issues before the maps get to crazy. I cant imagine playing a heavy lag RPG online at the moment.

  • I lost 5 rounds of 2v2 Random Silver in a row, and got promoted to gold.

My hand broke my nose from major face palming.

If I'm losing many games, I deserve to remain in my ladder and eventually fall down a rank, not a promotion.

  • Sounds like a interesting system they are using. Wish i could see the numbers, Maybe other people are losing worse? i am not sure how they calculate it.

  • Hey, this is just a thought, but...what if they do more then just win loss ratio? They keep track of your apm, I see no reason why they wouldn't keep track of that either. I am 4-1 and got into gold, and now am at about a 50/50 ratio ( i have one really dumb loss cuz i won, the other guy left...I HIT SURRENDER to quit.[yes you still lose points if you hit surrender after the opponent leaves.])

  • A higher apm doesnt mean a better player, I think blizzard would also take this into account. Otherwise, everyone would just select a bunch of units and keep rightclicking around the map to get APM up, which would ensure they get promoted in no time.

And they would let go of game cause they would find out gold is not for them. (its a big mistake to do what you just said since that would not help anyone at all except your enemies who would have an 100% win in their hands)

  • They do not monitor APM and also APM is not THE measure of skill. It is only a parameter. I'm quite confused how the system works. I'm in Bronze now and I win 6 matches in a row from opponents that are "favoured" and I only get 5 points total. Then, when the match finishes it says that I was favoured. ??? Then...I loose a single match and I get deducted 22? This makes no sense. The guy was also "favoured" and was not a total noob. On 2v2 every time I win a match I get 22 points. This is ridiculous in my opinion and there should be a better method. I played a total of 60-70 league games most 1v1 with a 60% win ratio yet stuck with 0-4 points in the ladder being number 80. There must be a bug or something.

  • Here is what I heard and also believe:

The statistics of the game don't affect the outcome of your placement. You're pitted against people from different leagues. If you manage to win against say a bronze player then the matchmaking system puts you up against a silver etc. etc. until there's an equilibrium between wins and losses at whatever league.

Any thoughts? It sounds extremely simple and extremely fitting to how BNets system seems to work.
