Opinions on custom games, should there be match making system?

Looking for some opinions on custom games..

I play custom games to warm up, or when I'm on tilt so I can catch my bearings and go ladder from there.

I'm a platinum player working my way steadily up the ladders over the past few weeks since I got the game.

Usually, I only play diamond players in custom games, thanks do the way the custom game joining works... This can be helpful in that I get to learn and see things that I don't see from players in my league, but annoying because I can't get warmed up when I get crushed.

I think some loose matchmaking system for custom games would be nice, at least for the games on regular melee maps that are popular enough to not make you wait ten years for a match.

I just think it sucks, I know two friends in lower leagues than myself who gave up on practicing in custom games because it's just not fair for them more often than not.

I'm not trying whine but I think it sucks that diamond players can go into custom games and pretty much walk all over most of their opponents, I wouldn't mind seeing some match making so that everybody has a shot at a fun, competitive game that won't affect their ladder score if they want to try weird new tactics.

If you comment post your league with the post so we can see how placement effects your opinion. My guess is that diamond players like it the way it is and lower leagues do not..

I started at silver with the placement matches and slowly managed to work my way up, now balancing around the top 5 in gold but not getting promoted. Despite that, whenever I play custom games, I find myself either facing a completely new opponent or evenly matched, never had a complete walkover, so I havent had any issue with matchmaking. I do however, think that matchmaking in custom games is unneccessary. The whole point of matchmaking is to escape the leagues, if one wanted to play a game of his or her level, she would just go to play a league game instead. Having matchmaking ruins the purpose of it, even if its a less stringent version.

I don't agree that it would defeat the purpose of the 1v1 custom games.. I think cooperative games and 2v2s etc should be kept the same, but the 1v1 not so much.

I've played quite a few custom games, from bronze all the way to plat, and im either playing an opponent completely not up to my skill level, or one way beyond it, I've had very few even matches there.

If one wants and even match, then yes, ladders are there, but what if you're playing on tilt and want to warm up some on a non ranked system? Unless you have friends of similar skill level, you're screwed.

What if there was a check box for custom games, like "match skill level" so you could decide..

Just a thought, because I like to play custom to try out new strats but can't do so against my skill level without risking points in the ladders.

Veior, if you've never had a walkover in custom games, I doubt you have played many.. Would you like to play me in a custom game? We'll see if you get as tired of it as the other players I know who can't get any practice without doing it in league. I'm not trying to make your opinion invalid, just seems a little closed minded or uneducated to me, unless me and my friends just somehow get uneven matches and you somehow do..

Maybe I have been rather lucky, but I still believe that ranking should stay out of custom games, or it will be more or less a league game. Some might want to try new strats on a non ranked platform, but that will usually ensure more losses or a rank disproportionate to their actual skill level. I believe new strategies should be tried against players of any skill level if you want ensure it to be a viable strategy, it would be useless if it say, only worked on bronze league players and not silver league. Added to that, ranking custom games themselves would be an extremely hard task, seeing as many people play with their friends with completely improper gameplay styles and such, it would be close to impossible to correctly rank them correctly. Nothing stops you from using custom games to test out new strats and if you really wish to play against others of similar skill level, just use the leagues, I doubt a single loss or so will really affect your ranking in the long run.
